Hormiphora californensis is a ctenophore, or comb jelly, common to the Eastern temperate Pacific Ocean. In this photo, they can be seen with their sticky tentacles cast out to capture plankton. Gene conversion is GC-biased. In this issue, Jackson et al. leverage the high gene conversion rates that maintain large palindromes on the primate X chromosome to estimate the magnitude of GC bias over the past 25 million years, finding a 2:1 preference for GC bases over AT bases. Using this unconventional approach, the current study corroborates earlier estimates of the magnitude of GC bias derived from analyses of human meioses, and partially explains elevated GC content in X palindromes.
