Abstract
The discretization of a tangent-point potential with a |$C^1$| conforming finite element method is investigated. Error bounds for the practical evaluation of the potential and its variation are derived. A numerical scheme for the minimization of a weighted sum of bending energy and potential is devised and tested numerically for open and closed curves.
