Objective: To examine the performance differences between people diagnosed with Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and those without ADHD on the California Verbal Learning Test Second Edition (CVLT-II). Also, to examine whether the ADHD group will use less semantic clustering skills than the control group. Method: Data for a control group was collected at a medium-sized southeastern university that included the Wechsler Abbreviated Scale of Intelligence, Trail Making Test A and B, as well as the Test of Memory Malingering, and the CVLT-II to the ADHD group. Controls were matched to clients diagnosed with ADHD based on Full Scale IQ, age, and gender (n = 35), and a paired samples t-test was conducted. Results: People diagnosed with ADHD performed significantly worse on the List B immediate recall trial of the CVLT-II (p = .026, CI = −1.63 to −.11). People with ADHD also displayed a weakness in Total Semantic Clustering for immediate recall trials (p = .063, CI = −.04 to 1.53). No other discrepancies were found. Conclusion(s): People diagnosed with ADHD have a more difficult learning new material after learning other material over a certain amount of time. Also, they have a difficult time organizing information to recall information more efficiently.
