The opportunities to gather and discuss the practical issues confronting the response to emerging epidemics in a setting that is not focused on public health may be rare, but Pandemic, a board game designed by Matt Leacock, changes that. Designed around the idea of containing several emerging pathogens across the globe, it is potentially one of the more enjoyable ways for the lay public to interact with infectious disease epidemiology.

Designed for 2–4 players (and in the reviewer's experience, it is easier with 4) and taking less than an hour to play, Pandemic is a cooperative game in which each player takes the role of a specific type of public health professional: a researcher, an operations expert, a field medic, etc....
