To the Editor: We thank Dr Tsuda for his valuable comments on our data showing a strong modification effect of visceral adiposity and blood pressure on the association between albuminuria and uricemia. We demonstrated an increase in serum uric acid levels by the synergistic interaction of albuminuria with visceral adiposity, and of albuminuria with blood pressure, and proposed an obesity-related hypertension as an underlying mechanism.1 We fully agree that oxidative stress could be one of the molecular mechanisms responsible for the observed association between serum uric acid and albuminuria in obese individuals. Increased production of reactive oxygen species with subsequent enhanced inactivation or reduced synthesis of nitric oxide (NO) have been suggested to be the common pathogenic mechanism of endothelial dysfunction.2 Reduced NO bioavailability and enhanced activation of the renin–angiotensin–aldosterone system are...
