The efficacy and tolerability of felodipine iv (F) vs nifedipine iv (N) was evalutated in patients aged 18–75 yrs with emergency hypertension (DBP≥115 mmHg). All patients received a crushed nifedipine 5 mg capsule. If after a 15 min run-in period DBP≥110mmHg, patients were randomized to receive either F (0.01 mg/min) or N (0.02mg/min). The infusion rate was decreased after 60 min or if DBP≤105 mmHg. 122 (71 male) patients (60 F, 62 N) completed the study of which 52% in each treatment group presented with cerebral or cardiac symptoms attributable to the hypertensive state. There were no differences between treatment groups at baseline (SBP/DBP F-187/119mmHg, N-194/117mmHg).
There were no significant differences between the F and N treated groups regarding efficacy or tolerability and there were no negative cerebral or...
