The aim of the study was to evaluate the changes in fluid and ionic homeostasis, as well as in metabolic and hormonal parameters induced by high salt intake in salt-sensitive and salt-resistant essential hypertensive patients (EH). After a 4-week unrestricted salt period, 50 EH (23m, 27f) aged 52±12 years received a diet containing 20 mmol NaCl/day for 14 days, supplemented by placebo tablets during the first 7 days (low salt period) and NaCl tablets (240 mmol/day) for the last 7 days (high salt period). A 24-h ABPM using a SpaceLab 90207 was performed the last day of both periods. Patients exhibiting a significant rise (p<.05) of 24-h mean arterial BP values (MBP) from the low to high salt diet were considered salt-sensitive EH.
