The purpose of the study was to evaluate the antihypertensive efficacy and tolerability of a very low dose of hydrochlorothiazide (hctz) in hypertensive patients inadequately controlled with enalapril 20 mg monotherapy. A total of 402 patients entered this placebo-controlled, double-blinded, randomized study carried out in 29 centres in 3 Nordic countries. Of these, 296 patients had persistent DBP ≥ 95 mmHg after 8 weeks of enalapril treatment. Group I received placebo, II received hctz 6 mg, and III received 12.5 mg hctz in addition to enalapril, and were then followed for another 8 weeks. In a small subgroup (n=24) albumin excretion, fibrinolytic capacity and insulin, glucose were also investigated.
