Abstract

The aim of this study was to compare blood pressure (BP) of active and sedentary elderly individuals measured by different methods, particulary BP fall during the sleep.

We examined 106 individuals, 60-year-old or older, female or male sex, sedentary normotensives (SN)or hipertensives (SH)and active(at least 30 minutes of dynamic exercise, three times a week, for 6 months) normotensives (AN) and hipertensives (AH), despite of treatment. We evaluate casual BP with four seat measurements in two days, 24-hour ambulatory BP monitoring (ABPM) (Spacelabs 90207), and home BP with 10 measurements during 24 hours (Omron HEM 705 CP). In each subject averages were obtained, including for daytime (7 AM to 11 PM) and nighttime (11 PM to 7 AM). We also subtracted nighttime BP from daytime BP (Day-Night) and calculated the percentage of fall. Statistical evaluation: unpaired Student t test. Results are expressed by average ± standard deviation.

Among active individuals, 47.5% did exercise (86.9% isolated or associated walking) 5 days a week or more, 65.6% during 60 minutes or more and 90.2% for 1 year or more. All BP averages of the SN group were equal to the AN group. During the day, no differences were detected between BP of SH and AH, but there was smaller fall of diastolic AH BP during the night period: 10.9±7.2%versus 15.3±8.2% - p=0.025. (See Table)

In conclusion, in this study, BP of the active elderly was equal to BP of sedentary ones during the day, however the diastolic BP fall during nighttime was smaller in active hipertensive elderly.
