Call for papers for a special issue of the Annals of Work Exposures and Health: Sex, Gender, Work and Health

Female labour force participation rates have increased dramatically over the last three decades, although men and women still occupy very different segments of the labour market. Much of what we know about the relationships between work exposures and health outcomes has been generated in male-only or male-dominated samples.
Differences in health between men and women can be a result of both “sex” and “gender” differences. By sex we mean physical characteristics such as hormones, anatomy, genes, and physiology. By gender we mean socially-constructed roles, behaviours, expressions and identities of women, men, and gender diverse people.
While research agencies in North America and Europe have recognised that both sex and gender matter in understanding the relationships between work exposures and health outcomes, and that research that fails to take sex and gender into account is limited in both quality and applicability, examples of gender/sex sensitive approaches, in particular in the area of work exposures and health are lacking.
To address this important research gap, the editors of the Annals of Work Exposures and Health are planning a special issue of the journal to highlight examples of innovative approaches in exploring the role of sex and gender that are focused on work-related exposures and health outcomes. In approaching this subject, we encourage a broad definition of exposures (to include social, psychological and economic exposures in addition to physical, chemical and biological), and of work (including alternative forms of both paid and unpaid labor, in addition to work organization and precarity).
In short, we are seeking papers that exemplify excellence in considering sex and gender as part of scientific enquiry in the area of work exposures and health.
This special issue will be co-edited by Margaret Quinn (Lowell Center for Sustainable Production at the University of Massachusetts Lowell) and Peter Smith (Institute for Work & Health, Toronto).
We are looking for papers including but not limited to the following areas:
- Exploration of the role of sex and gender in producing inequalities in work-related exposures and outcomes, especially broader approaches to defining work and innovative study designs and methodologies to evaluate expanded definitions of work.
- Examining potential differences in the relationships between work and health outcomes between men and women, and seeking to further understand biological, social and/or economic mechanisms for these differences.
- Documenting the experiences of men and women in male-dominated or female-dominated occupational groups and how gender-related experiences may combine with other work-related exposures to impact health.
- Innovating approaches to measuring or understanding concepts of sex and gender in quantitative analyses of exposures and health.
The process for this special issue is as follows.
- Initial submission of abstracts, no longer than 500 words, that outline objectives, data sources, methods and preliminary results should be submitted by email to Michelle Chan (email@example.com), using this form, no later than
January 31st, 2017(Deadline Now Extended to Feb 21st, 2017).
- An invitation to submit a full-length paper will be given to selected abstracts by March 10th, 2017.
- A full-length submission will be required to the journal by June 2nd, at which point they will undergo the normal peer-review process at the Annals of Work Exposures and Health. We anticipate initial reviewer comments will be provided to authors within 1 to 2 months of submission, with a final decision made on all manuscripts within 3 months of submission.
- We anticipate publication before the end of 2017.
