Complexity/dynamic system theory (CDST) has gained considerable currency since Larsen-Freeman (1997) formally introduced it to applied linguistics. As Larsen-Freeman states in the foreword to Hiver and AI-Hoorie’s Research Methods for Complexity Theory in Applied Linguistics, if the value of CDST is to be fully realized, researchers need to conduct research and analysis adduce evidence informed by CDST (p. viii). However, many applied linguists are deterred from CDST because they lack the knowledge or are uncertain of what designing and conducting actual CDST-compatible research entails. This volume is a timely contribution as it offers invaluable guidance on how to design and implement CDST research.

The volume consists of 19 chapters, organized into four thematic and interrelated parts, with a foreword by Larsen-Freeman. Comprising an overview of CDST and an in-depth examination of CDST’s philosophy of science, the first three chapters (Part 1) serve the purpose of laying the ground for the following two parts covering research methods. Part 2 (Qualitative Methods) and Part 3 (Quantitative Methods) together provide a comprehensive and informative conceptual introduction to 14 different methods for CDST research. Part 4 discusses method integration and provides a glossary and resources for future CDST research.
