In this study, the authors’ examined the effectiveness of facial muscles exercises (FMEs) using the Pao device (MTG, Nagoya, Japan) on facial rejuvenation.1 The Pao device has been purported to strengthen peri-oral muscles through stimulating their isometric contraction as the user holds the device in their mouth forming an “O” whilst rocking the device back and forth. While the device claims to reduce the depth of nasolabial folds and improve jawline contour, this has not been objectively proven nor are the exact mechanisms clear, hence the basis for the authors’ study.

Fifty females from the general public who expressed concern and were deemed to have prominence of their nasolabial folds or poor jawline contour were recruited by the authors. The mean age of these subjects was 40 years. All patients were advised to perform FMEs using the Pao device based on a routine of 30 seconds, twice a day, for 8 weeks, although compliance was not witnessed and hence not guaranteed. Outcomes were assessed at the beginning and 8 weeks after completion of FMEs. Statistical analyses were performed on the quantitative data to identify any differences.
