Information for Authors

Please note that the journal now encourages authors to complete their copyright licence to publish form online

This Journal takes publication ethics very seriously. If misconduct is found or suspected after the manuscript is published, the journal will investigate the matter and this may result in the article subsequently being retracted.

Papers should be submitted electronically via the online submission website . Please read the online submission instructions first. Any editoral or submission queries should be sent to:

Editor, Biometrika
Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne
Station 8
CH-1015 Lausanne
+41 (0)21 693 5502

Papers should be as concise as possible without detracting from clarity. A copy of any important unpublished reference should be uploaded when submitting the paper.
Papers submitted to Biometrika must neither have been published nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere.

For creating manuscripts in LaTeX, Biometrika strongly recommends the use of its TeX template:

Only PDF files should be submitted to Biometrika. In most cases the only uploaded file is the submission itself, including any figures and tables, and the bibliography. In some cases there is also a file of supplementary material, and/or a copy of any important unpublished references.

If a paper is accepted, all TeX-related files should be sent to the editorial office. This includes any figures (in .eps format), .bib, .sty, and .bst files. No additional styles should be used unless necessary (e.g., to include figure files, to set diagrams, etc.).
The use of private macros is discouraged. Only macros used in the manuscript should be supplied with the article (i.e., whole macro libraries from authors’ sites should not be supplied).

References should be supplied in standard Biometrika format using \bibitem and thebibliography environment. No private programs or counters should be used to generate the style of citations and references.

Authors are asked to use the LaTeX tags (\ref, \label, \cite, \citet, \citep, etc.) for the automatic referencing to figures, tables, reference citations, etc. If these are not used, an accepted manuscript will be held up during the production stages.

A style guide for Biometrika can be found in biometrika.zip.

You can also find the most recent version of "Notes for Authors" in issue 1 of the current volume.

Particularly if English is not your first language, before submitting your manuscript you may wish to have it edited for language. This is not a mandatory step, but may help to ensure that the academic content of your paper is fully understood by journal editors and reviewers. Language editing does not guarantee that your manuscript will be accepted for publication. There are specialist language editing companies that offer this service and you can find these easily by searching online. Authors are liable for all costs associated with such services. Please note that edited manuscripts will still need to undergo peer-review by the journal.

It is a condition of publication in Biometrika that authors assign copyright to the Biometrika Trust. This ensures that requests from third parties to reproduce articles are handled efficiently and consistently and will also allow the article to be as widely disseminated as possible. As part of the licence agreement, Authors may use their own material in other publications provided that Biometrika is acknowledged as the original place of publication.

Upon receipt of accepted manuscripts at Oxford Journals authors will be invited to complete an online copyright licence to publish form.

Please note that by submitting an article for publication you confirm that you are the corresponding/submitting author and that Oxford University Press ("OUP") may retain your email address for the purpose of communicating with you about the article. You agree to notify OUP immediately if your details change. If your article is accepted for publication OUP will contact you using the email address you have used in the registration process. Please note that OUP does not retain copies of rejected articles.

Third-Party Content in Open Access papers. If you will be publishing your paper under an Open Access licence but it contains material for which you do not have Open Access re-use permissions, please state this clearly by supplying the following credit line alongside the material:

Title of content
Author, Original publication, year of original publication, by permission of [rights holder]

This image/content is not covered by the terms of the Creative Commons licence of this publication. For permission to reuse, please contact the rights holder.

Biometrika authors have the option to publish their paper under the Oxford Open initiative; whereby, for a charge, their paper will be made freely available online immediately upon publication. After your manuscript is accepted the corresponding author will be required to accept a mandatory licence to publish agreement. As part of the licensing process you will be asked to indicate whether or not you wish to pay for open access. If you do not select the open access option, your paper will be published with standard subscription-based access and you will not be charged.

Oxford Open articles are published under Creative Commons licences. Authors publishing in Biometrika can use the following Creative Commons licences for their articles:

• Creative Commons Attribution licence (CC-BY)
