This is an outstanding book, which the author has translated from his original French version, Causalité et lois de la nature ([1999]). Kistler’s primary aim is to develop his own theory of causation: an energy transference theory of what he calls physical causation. Having developed the theory, he then applies it and relates it to the issue of laws of nature. Although the book does not profess to offer a survey of pre-existing theories, it does provide assessments of many of the leading rivals along the way. Thus, even though Kistler is very much concerned with advertising his own account, by the end of the book one does have a grasp of much of the existing literature and debate....
