Abstract

The provision of high-quality care with good outcomes is a challenge for most clinicians working in the complex health system. Most clinicians have not had formal training in leadership yet are expected to take on a leadership and management role when appointed as a consultant in a health service. In this handbook, the basics of clinical leadership are provided with a practical approach on how to be an effective clinical leader and manager. The handbook starts with a theoretical analysis of leadership and consideration of leadership frameworks, and then provides practical ways of how to be a good manager and leader. Management skills are focused on the day-to-day requirements of a consultant working within a multiprofessional clinical team. Different components of leadership are considered to ensure that the clinician leader has a broad understanding of what is required to be an effective leader. This includes leading teams to deliver quality care and to engender patient safety, knowing how to ensure good outcomes and to be able to use data for improvement, knowing how to commission services and to develop business cases, and being a leader who can facilitate the development of person-centred care and provide leadership for education of the next generation of leaders. The handbook provides a practical approach based on sound theory in each area covered.
