Rather than a conventional disciplinary history, this volume deals with the intellectual response of academics in Britain to the political challenges of the twentieth century. So, the idea from which this book was initially born had no connection with commemorating the centenary of the British Academy, although in the event the timing has proved apposite. It derived in part from a sense that contemporary political scientists in Britain had been rather uninterested in exploring their own past. As they had not sought to demonstrate their pride of ancestry, they could not reproach others with not esteeming them at their own value or distinguishing clearly between those who practise and those who analyse politics in a century that has made severe demands on both practitioners and analysts.
The proposal to undertake a study of the British contribution to the development of political science in the twentieth century was made by Jack Hayward when he chaired the Politics Section of the Academy. The suggestion was to focus on a dozen or so leading figures, but discussion in the Section quickly led to a general preference that the focus should be upon themes and a broader range of scholarship rather than a limited number of personalities. The task of preparing a detailed set of proposals, consisting of the chapter subjects and their suggested authors, was confided to an augmented Section Standing Committee consisting of Archie Brown, John Dunn, Jack Hayward and Adam Roberts, and after several redrafts it received the blessing of the Section. It was agreed that the volume should be edited jointly by Brian Barry, Archie Brown and Jack Hayward and that the Academy should be asked to provide modest financial support to hold three preparatory symposia at which the draft chapters would be discussed. A grant was duly made by the British Academy and contributors were approached.
