10 National Liberation in The Age of Globalization

Abstract
Capitalist globalization becomes an economic and political reality, and it continues to pose a major challenge to local and national cultures. More concentrated ownerships of the major media, program producers, and international film production companies are fewer. National cultural revival is transcending divisions and borders between Arab states, regions, and peoples—divisions originally prescribed and designed by colonial powers in the first decade of the twentieth century. Chahine's cinema has prefigured and inspired New Arab Cinema filmmakers from being among the first filmmakers to place and celebrate the presence of peasants and workers on the Arab film screen, to the steadfast support for anticolonial and pan-Arab struggles, to the inclusive and more heterogeneous outlook on Arab identity, to the anxious concern over the rise of religious fundamentalism, to the struggle for grass roots democratic change.
