Abstract
Chapter 4 concerns the reestablishment of a moral order in a refugee camp continuously shaken since the Nakba. No longer Intifada activists, the camp residents focused on being morally upright in other ways. The main argument is that the political and economic crisis the refugees found themselves in was interpreted as a moral crisis that also demanded moral responses. They carefully watched their own and others’ conduct so as to maintain the boundaries of their community and their own moral superiority. Palestinian collaborators and the ambiguous martyr operations/suicide bombings were especially challenging for the community.
