Abstract
This chapter presents material on the understanding and construction of environmental issues. Unless otherwise specified the data come from the first survey (1995) of the project. However, in the second survey (1997) some additional questions were asked to complete the picture. The research project used some questions that asked for general definitions, and some that probed by asking people to compare or to rank different circumstances, or that provided with the material to do so. The overall picture shows how respondents think about the environment, the choices they prefer, and the understandings they have. It reveals who is concerned, what they are concerned about, and what fears they may have. There is also additional material on how people interpret the causes of pollution and environmental change, and who or what they hold responsible for these changes.
