I feel enormous debt to, and appreciation for, the many people and institutions who helped, encouraged, and supported me during the years of researching and writing this book. The book is the product of a long process that began when I moved to the Israeli-occupied Palestinian town of Ramallah in 1986 and started to teach Middle East studies and history at the Friends Girls School. I was completely inexperienced at teaching secondary school, and had very little formal knowledge of Middle East history. But teaching at a school for Palestinian girls was an exhilarating and inspiring experience. My students were young Palestinian women who had either grown up in the United States or had lived in the Ramallah area for most of their lives. They had an insatiable appetite and enthusiasm for learning that made teaching them a pleasure and a joy. Our experience of the turbulent period leading into and during the intifada contributed to our mutually and simultaneously developing a deep interest in, and appreciation for, their history and politics. I probably learned more from them than they did from me. I thank them all for (albeit unknowingly) sparking my interest in their history, and, again, unknowingly, guiding me to my life's work. They were wonderful students. Although I cannot claim credit for it, some of them are themselves becoming accomplished scholars and researchers. I am very proud of them and honored by our continued association and friendship.
