Abstract
The army of the “Greek Roman Empire” was provided by the Notitia Dignitatum, whose eastern half was composed in Latin, apparently in about 401. The army that it lists has been estimated by Warren Treadgold at some three hundred thousand men, which was a reasonable estimate which gave no reason to depart. Notitia's role was to structure the information by the major officials, then list the various units that served under each rank. The strength of the document was its very clear specification of the upper ranks of the military hierarchy and its detailed listing of all the units of different types.
