As introduced by the Guest Editors of the March 2016 Spotlight Issue, atrial fibrillation represents a major medical need and is, fortunately, also a very active field of novel discoveries and research with strong translational potential, often in bedside-bench-bedside reiterative cycles.

At the occasion of the March 2016 Spotlight Issue, Cardiovascular Research presents a collection of relevant original research articles and short reviews in the field of atrial fibrillation that were recently published in the journal and provides free access to these until the 15th June 2016. Many of these articles relate to topics covered in the reviews of the spotlight issue, but also beyond.
