Dengue is a mosquito-borne acute viral illness. The etiological agent, dengue virus (DENV), is transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes, principally Aedes aegypti, which also transmits Zika and yellow fever viruses. Infection results in a spectrum of clinical outcomes, from self-limiting illness in the majority to severe manifestations that include hypovolemic shock from uncompensated plasma leakage, internal bleeding, and organ impairment in approximately 5% of patients. If not optimally managed, patients in the severe end of the disease spectrum meet a mortality rate as high as 20% [1].
