Instructions to Authors
CJRES workflow
The Cambridge Journal of Regions, Economy and Society is an international multi-disciplinary journal publishing refereed papers on the spatial dimensions of contemporary socio-economic-political change.
Three issues of the journal are published annually, and each of these issues are themed. Each issue is managed by a team of Special Issue Editors, and all content for publication is solicited by invitations following a Call for Papers. Authors are requested to submit an abstract for an open Call for Papers. The Editors invite full papers following their selection process and full papers are peer-reviewed. Please see the open current calls for papers.
Manuscripts will only be considered for review where they have been assessed to fit into an available Special Issue.
All submissions must be made via the CJRES online submission website.

Figure accessibility and alt text
Incorporating alt text (alternative text) when submitting your paper helps to foster inclusivity and accessibility. Good alt text ensures that individuals with visual impairments or those using screen readers can comprehend the content and context of your figures. The aim of alt text is to provide concise and informative descriptions of your figure so that all readers have access to the same level of information and understanding, and that all can engage with and benefit from the visual elements integral to scholarly content. Including alt text demonstrates a commitment to accessibility and enhances the overall impact and reach of your work.
Alt text is applicable to all images, figures, illustrations, and photographs.
Alt text is only accessible via e-reader and so it won’t appear as part of the typeset article.
Detailed guidance on how to draft and submit alt text.
Journal of Economic Literature (JEL) Classification Codes
The Journal offers browse-by-subject using JEL codes. Authors should provide the relevant JEL codes upon submission.
Colour illustrations
Colour illustrations are accepted and will be published in colour in the online version, however authors will be required to contribute to the cost of the reproduction if they elect to request colour publication in the print version. Colour figures will incur a printing charge of £350 each. Illustrations for which colour is not essential can be reproduced as black and white images in the print journal. This option is not subject to colour charges.
Supplementary information
*Supporting material that is not essential for inclusion in the full text of the manuscript, but would nevertheless benefit the reader, can be made available by the publisher as online-only content, linked to the online manuscript. The material should not be essential to understanding the conclusions of the paper, but should contain data that is additional or complementary and directly relevant to the article content. Such information might include more detailed methods, extended data sets/data analysis, or additional figures (including colour).
All text and figures must be provided in suitable electronic formats (instructions for the preparation of Supplementary material can be viewed here). All material to be considered as Supplementary material must be submitted at the same time as the main manuscript for peer review. It cannot be altered or replaced after the paper has been accepted for publication. Please indicate clearly the material intended as Supplementary material upon submission. Also ensure that the Supplementary material is referred to in the main manuscript where necessary.
Language editing
Particularly if English is not your first language, before submitting your manuscript you may wish to have it edited for language. This is not a mandatory step, but may help to ensure that the academic content of your paper is fully understood by journal editors and reviewers. Language editing does not guarantee that your manuscript will be accepted for publication. There are many specialist language editing services available and you can find these easily by searching online. Authors are liable for all costs associated with such services. Please note that edited manuscripts will still need to undergo peer-review by the journal.
Online submission instructions
Please refer to the guidance notes on manuscript submission.
Copyright
Upon receipt of accepted manuscripts at Oxford Journals authors will be invited to complete an online copyright licence to publish form.
Please note that by submitting an article for publication you confirm that you are the corresponding/submitting author and that Oxford University Press ("OUP") may retain your email address for the purpose of communicating with you about the article. You agree to notify OUP immediately if your details change. If your article is accepted for publication OUP will contact you using the email address you have used in the registration process. Please note that OUP does not retain copies of rejected articles
It is a condition of publication in the Journal that authors licence Copyright to the Cambridge Political Economy Society. This ensures that requests from third parties to reproduce articles are handled efficiently and consistently and will also allow the article to be as widely disseminated as possible. In licensing copyright, authors may use their own material in other publications provided that the Journal is acknowledged as the original place of publication, and Oxford University Press is notified in writing and in advance.
Open access option for authors
Cambridge Journal of Regions, Economy and Society offers the option of publishing under either a standard licence or an open access licence. Please note that some funders require open access publication as a condition of funding. If you are unsure whether you are required to publish open access, please do clarify any such requirements with your funder or institution.
Should you wish to publish your article open access, you should select your choice of open access licence in our online system after your article has been accepted for publication. You will need to pay an open access charge to publish under an open access licence.
Details of the open access licences and open access charges.
OUP has a growing number of Read and Publish agreements with institutions and consortia which provide funding for open access publishing. This means authors from participating institutions can publish open access, and the institution may pay the charge. Find out if your institution is participating.
To be eligible for one of OUP’s Read and Publish agreements, the corresponding author must provide their qualifying institution as their primary affiliation when they submit their manuscript.
CJRES does not indicate the corresponding author in the published article, but this designation is a system requirement. After submission, changing who is designated as the corresponding author will be permitted only where there is a substantive reason to do so. For the avoidance of doubt, changing the corresponding author in order to access Read and Publish funding is not permissible.

Conflict of interest policy
Editors
Editors Submission by Editor
A paper submitted by one of the Editors will be handled by another Editor who is not at the same institution. The other Editor will select referees and make all decisions on the paper. The decision process will be handled in such a way that the submitting Editor does not have access to information or correspondence relating to the submission.
Submission by an author at the same institution as one of the Editors
A paper submitted by an author who is at the same institution as one of the Editors will be overseen by one of the Editors who is not at that institution, who will be responsible for the final decision on the paper.
Submission by author whose relationship with Editor might create the perception of bias
If a paper is submitted by an author whose relationship with one of the Editors might create the perception of bias (e.g. in terms of close family/partner/friendship or conflict/rivalry), the Editor will declare a conflict of interest and the paper will be handled by one of the other Editors. The Editor who has declared a conflict of interest will not be involved in selecting referees or making any decisions on the paper.
General policy
If an Editor feels that there is likely to be a perception of a conflict of interest in relation to their handling of a submission, they will declare it to the other Editors, and the paper will be handled in the same way as described above.
Referees
Potential conflict of interest for referee
The invitation letter to referees will include the following wording: ‘If you think you know the identity of the author and feel there is a strong conflict of interest in your refereeing this paper, please let me know. By accepting this invitation, it is assumed there is no such conflict of interest.’ Standard policy will be not to use a referee if a conflict of interest has been declared, but the Editors may use their discretion.
Authors
Sources of funding
On acceptance, authors will be asked to provide a statement declaring all sources of funding relating to their paper, and the statement will be printed in the Acknowledgements section at the end of their paper.
Peer Review Policy
This journal operates double-anonymized peer review, meaning that the authors’ identities are hidden from reviewers, and the reviewers’ identities are hidden from authors. The Editors have oversight of the reviewers’ and the authors’ names. For full details about the peer review process, see Fair editing and peer review.
