ON THE COVER Sickle cells. Sickle cell disease affects 1 out of every 365 African American newborns and 1 out of every 16,300 Hispanic American newborns. While much rarer in other groups, race or ethnicity should not be a reason to avoid screening for sickle cell disease or sickle disease trait. This month’s Clinical Case Study illustrates such a situation, where the consideration of a patient’s race possibly delayed proper testing, diagnosis, and treatment for a young White female with a complicated history of sickle cell trait.
