We are grateful for the assistance of many Cornellians. Elaine Engst, university archivist, guided us through the massive Presidential Papers. Robert Barker, director of university photography, Laura Linke ’73 (Arts and Sciences), ’80 (Human Ecology), senior reference specialist at Rare Books and Manuscript Collections, and Don Lebow, graphic designer for the School of Continuing Education and Summer Sessions, helped us identify the illustrations that appear in this book. Eisha Neely, reproductions, permissions, and exhibitions coordinator at Rare and Manuscript Collections, was masterly in managing the transfer of those photos to the finished book. The editors of the Cornell Daily Sun allowed us to keep bound volumes of the newspaper in our offices as we completed our research. Jim Roberts, editor and publisher of the Cornell Alumni Magazine, tracked down articles and “tidbits” of information we had overlooked. Former vice president Tommy Bruce and several colleagues in University Communications, especially Claudia Wheatley, assisted us in searches through the Cornell Chronicle. J. Robert Cooke, emeritus professor of Engineering and former dean of the faculty, has spent an enormous amount of his time, energy, and resources digitizing documents about Cornell’s history, including memorial statements for deceased faculty and minutes of university faculty meetings. We are among many Cornellians who are in his debt. Our friend Keith Johnson ’56 shared his immense knowledge of the history of Cornell with us and provided encouragement just when we needed it. John Ackerman, the former director of Cornell University Press, has been unfailingly patient, persistent, and professional. We are grateful as well to Ange Romeo-Hall, who went well beyond her responsibilities as managing editor of Cornell University Press to copyedit our manuscript. Michael Busch, executive staff assistant, Office of the Vice Provost, was once again indispensably helpful.
