I dedicated the Persian original of this book to my mentor Ayatollah Hossein-Ali Montazeri Najaf-Abadi (1922–2009). At the time, it was not possible to explicitly mention his name due to censorship and political restrictions in Iran. The book was released when I left Iran and since he passed away a few months later, I am not sure he ever saw the book. I learned from him that most shari‘a rulings related to human interactions are not dictated and are not beyond rational (tawqifiyya) rulings. This includes human rights, which is one of the major points of this book. Grand Ayatollah Hossein-Ali Montazeri Najaf-Abadi (1922–2009) read the first draft of Chapter 5 and gave me his advice. God bless him.
It is a pleasure to record my gratitude to a number of scholars and institutions who had a role in shaping the chapters of this book. These include Nasser Hadian (School of Law and Political Science, Tehran University) in Chapter 3; Saeed Hajjarian, Alireza Alavitabar and Reza Kaffash Tehrani (editors of the daily magazine Sobh-e Emrouz) in Chapter 4; Isa Saharkhiz and Alireza Alavitabar (editors of the bimonthly journal Aftab) in Chapter 5; Ali Ghodsi (Department of Statistics, University of Waterloo, Canada) in Chapter 6; Ardeshir Amirarjomand and Amir Nikpay (both from the School of Law, Department of Human Rights, Shahid Beheshti University, Tehran) in Chapter 6; Mohammad Ja’far Habibzadeh (Department of Law, Tarbiat Modares University, Tehran) in Chapter 11; Ali-Akbar Shobeyri-Nejad (1941–2009) (Director, Research Council of the Institute of Advanced Research on Social Security) and Bahram Panahi (Research Deputy, Research Council of the Institute of Advanced Research on Social Security) in Chapter 14; Mofid University in Qom in Chapters 8 and 12; the women’s unit of the Mosharekat political party in Chapter 10; and the Islamic Association of Students of Iranian Universities in Chapters 1 and 9.
