8 The Health Impacts of Coal Mining and Coal-based Energy

Abstract
This chapter investigates the relationship between coal mining, coal-based energy production, and health in Emalahleni. We find in this chapter that this region has generally worse health metrics per capita compared to national averages despite its strong economic foundation and role. We also find that, excluding initiatives undertaken by the mines, the resourcing of the area per capita in terms of health personnel and finances was significantly below national averages. This again shows a lack of sensitivity by the state to the unique health challenges faced by regions with a high prevalence of coal mining and coal-based energy production. Relating this to the just transition literature, with the (likely) move to cleaner energy production, residents of this area will continue to experience health issues due to coal mining and coal-based power production for decades to come. Thus a just transition necessitates action on the part of the state to address this legacy of poor health outcomes.
