Abstract

This handbook is a schematic guide and a sampler on political science. It first provides an overview of the state of political science as a discipline before turning to a discussion of political theory and its relationship with the discipline of political science, history, philosophy, and “real world” politics. It also explores contemporary themes and developments in political science, from liberalism and communitarianism to feminism, democracy and critical theory, green political theory, and post-structuralism. Moreover, the book explores current trajectories in political theory and political science, the present state of play in the political philosophy discussions initiated and stimulated by John Rawls, the disenchantment with modernity, political institutions, the makeup of and/or actions taken by political parties in and out of legislatures, the link between law and politics, political behavior and citizen politics, recent trends and most promising new areas of investigation in political psychology, contextual political analysis, the role of political science in international relations, the relationship between capitalism and democracy, and public policy.
