For the inaugural virtual issue of The Economic Journal, the Editors have chosen to demonstrate how researchers in different fields of economics have found gender important for understanding the economy and individual behaviour. The collection covers a wide range of methods and issues–from politics, justice, education, all the way to demography–which illustrates the diversity of current research on gender. As a general interest journal, The Economic Journal is uniquely positioned to cut across the different fields within economics to foster the dialogue and cross-pollination between them. While the collection focuses on recent articles, it starts with an article published by Sidney Webb in the first volume of the Journal, entitled “The Alleged Differences in the Wages Paid to Men and to Women for Similar Work” which shows the topicality, then and now, of the subject for economics.
