Water Wisdom: Preparing the Groundwork for Cooperative and Sustainable Water Management in the Middle East. Edited by Alon Tal and Alfred Abd Rabbo. New Brunswick: Rutgers University Press, 2010. xix + 332 pp. Maps, figures, tables, and index. Paper $29.95.
Alerted by the dwindling quantity and deteriorating quality of freshwater in that little land between the Mediterranean Sea and the Jordan River, Alon Tal and Alfred Abd Rabbo in 2008 summoned a group of experts in an attempt both to depict the exact water situation and to suggest possible ways to avoid the looming water crisis in the region. This volume is the product of this group's work. It consists of fifteen thematic parts, each discussing a specific aspect of water use (groundwater management, stream restoration, sewage treatment, public involvement in decision making, legislation, international development policy, etc.). Each part is subdivided, reviewing the aspect from an “Israeli” and a “Palestinian” point of view.
