Background: Although central obesity differs according to ethnicity and environment, it is established as a solid risk factor for cardiovascular disease. However, it is not fully understood how obesity-related factors affect the progression of coronary artery calcification (CAC) in Korean population.
Purpose: We sought to evaluate the association of these obesity-related factors including visceral adipose tissue (VAT) and CAC progression.
Methods: This is an observational cohort study of 1,051 asymptomatic Korean subjects without a history of cardiovascular disease who underwent serial CAC scorings by multi-detector computed tomography (CT) with at least 1 year interval and adipose tissue measurement using non-contrast CT at baseline for a routine medical examination between 2003 and 2015. VAT area was measured at the level of umbilicus of CT. We evaluated absolute change in CAC scores by per-year and the binary classification by categories according to change in CAC (0: any increase, 1–99: >10, ≥100: ≥10% of baseline).
