Summary

Fifteen species of the fungal succession degrading Abies alba Mill. needles were tested for their ability ti decompose filter paper cellulose. Pure cultures with or without C-cosubstrates or with aqueous green needle extracts as culture medium were set up. Cellulolytic species were found throughout the succession. The activities of fungi colonizing only aged litter were inhibited by natural water soluble condensed tannins. The activities of fungi which colonize senescing needles were not inhibited. Biochemical microenvironmental factors seemed to be important determinants of the fungal community structure.
