Abstract
Terms commonly used in research on conquest and conversion are examined in this chapter, among them: “Maya,” “Spaniard,” “religion,” “conversion,” “Christianity,” “cult,” “idols,” “devils,” and “demons.” How change can be catalyzed and configured at the level of the individual is considered, with an example provided from medieval Italy. Beliefs and the idea of traditional religion are also discussed.
