Abstract
Civil War monuments that mark hallowed ground are stark reminders of places where human sacrifice occurred. While such monument often mark battlefields, they are also found in soldier cemeteries associated with the battlefields, camps, and hospitals of the Civil War, as well as in other places in the landscape. While this chapter principally considers Confederate monuments located in Florida and outside the state, the few Union monuments are examined as well. Monuments in the state primarily mark battlefields and the burial places of soldiers who died of battle wounds or disease. Outside the state, a few monuments are found on the battlefields where Florida troops fought, but many more are found in cemeteries where Florida’s soldier dead were buried after dying in camp, on the battlefield, or in hospitals.
