Far from being the product of one mind alone, this book represents the collaborative efforts of a diverse community of teachers, students, and practitioners. The seeds for this project were sown more than twenty years ago, and during that time I have become deeply and pleasantly indebted—spiritually, intellectually, and materially—to more people than I could possibly recount. In that sense, I think of this book as ours, not mine. Nevertheless, I take responsibility for all errors and shortcomings herein.
Special thanks to my colleagues in the Department of History of the University of South Carolina, a bright constellation of scholars with whom it was my great pleasure to interact and exchange ideas. Eric Bargeron, Nancy Brown, Becky Miller Davis, Bobby Donaldson, Kathryn Edwards, Adam Ewing, Veronica Gerald, Larry Glickman, Wanda Hendricks, Wesley Joyner, Thomas Lekan, Valinda Littlefield, Barry Malone, Preston McKever-Floyd, Stephanie Mitchem, Connie Schultz, Cleveland Sellers, Kathryn Silva, Patricia Sullivan, and Bob Weyeneth, among others, helped to broaden my mind, sharpen my thinking, and make me a better reader and writer. Several of them read all or part of this work, improving it beyond measure with their insightful comments and probing questions. Interactions, however brief, with the late John Hope Franklin, Henry Louis Gates, Leon Litwack, Waldo Martin, and the late Judge Matthew Perry, all guests of the department, were immensely encouraging. Walter Conser at the University of North Carolina, Wilmington, read an earlier version of this work and shed light on some important aspects of national and regional religious culture.
