Abstract
Chapter one follows the historical development of Brazilian cinema from Cinema Novo to the end of the twentieth century, focusing on the representation of men and masculinity in films that can be broadly categorized as crime films. This brief historical overview hones in on examples of authoritarian masculinity that undergird the character construction and expression of male protagonists. This chapter is by no means exhaustive but rather traces instances where the “authoritarian character” of Brazilian society that Chauí and DaMatta signal is on cinematic display.
