Abstract
In October 2019, eXXpedition launched a round-the-world sailing voyage that emphasized citizen science in understanding the impacts of single-use plastic in the oceans. The mission of the two-year trip—which featured 30 voyage legs, 300 women, and 38,000 nautical miles—was for multidisciplinary teams of women to learn and assist with scientific data collection and inquiry. The aim was to create “ambassadors” who will bring their global experiences back into their communities to help reduce plastic waste at the local level. Invited to join the crew as an historical archaeologist, the author sailed 1,600 nautical miles from Plymouth, England, to Sao Miguel in the Portuguese Azores. To work with the team, she had to overcome her fears to pursue new directions in the discipline, activism in archaeology, and the applicability of archaeological methods in understanding the material culture of modern plastics. This chapter explores the role of historical archaeology in science-based education and its ties to citizen scientists in overcoming future heritage preservation and ocean conservation issues.
