Writing history is, in many ways, a solitary endeavor. Historians spend a great deal of time alone, whether it be in archives, in front of computer screens, or in our own heads. Even our conversations often seem to be one-sided. After all, many of the people with whom we converse have not been around for a while.
But then again, many of those we have encountered have walked with us. And without them, the journey and the book it produced would have been very different.
My academic debts are many. This journey began in an undergraduate upper-division course on the US South. The class initiated a procession of respected professors who guided me toward attaining a doctorate in history: Robert Jones, James Dormon, Thomas Schoonover, Matthew Schott, C. Edward Skeen, Joseph Hawes, F. Jack Hurley, Margaret Caffrey, Abe Kriegel, and David Evans. A specific and special thank you to Charles Crawford, a mentor who provided a wonderful model for what it means to be a historian, a scholar, a teacher, and a friend.
