9 Toward a Christian Pedagogy of Art

Abstract
The Jewish author of this chapter ponders why there have been so few Jews in the visual arts, at least that was the case until two hundred years ago. His answer is that until the rise of secular democracy “art was a Christian endeavor”. For centuries art in the west came from fundamental Christian doctrines. Now we are seeing the abandonment of art to the Devil's care and it is devastating, the author believes. The church is no longer the central patron of arts. Major concern is now for building a theoretical as well as practical foundation for the teaching of studio art. The impulse to preserve and pass on is at the heart of Christian faith. One must have an all-consuming commitment not to art but to Christ and his calling, whatever that calling might be.
