Roland Barthes Centenary
2015 marks the centenary of the birth of Roland Barthes. A large number of conferences, exhibitions, publications and other events have been planned by way of commemorating this hugely influential figure and assessing his continuing importance. French Studies and its sister publication French Studies Bulletin have over several decades been central in promoting work on Barthes. Their pages offer a record of the shifting perceptions of his work, as new preoccupations have emerged and new centres of interest have been identified. To mark the centenary year, the editors of both publications have put together a virtual issue that makes a large number of previously published items on Barthes freely available to all (see the table of contents below). These include four substantial articles from the journal, which will be supplemented by an état présent on Barthes studies due to appear in the July 2015 issue (69.3); there are also four shorter articles that have been published in French Studies Bulletin , and thirty reviews in French Studies dating from 1967 to the present. The reviews cover work by, on, or including Barthes, and together with the articles and shorter contributions offer a fascinating overview of many years of scholarship. The editors hope that scholars will find this a helpful and useful resource. All of the articles and reviews can be directly accessed by clicking on the links in the table of contents.
