Abstract
This chapter examines the Moriones Festival in Boac, the provincial capital Marinduque in Luzon. This massive, lumbering event which culminates in the mock-beheading of the Roman soldier Longinus on Black Saturday has a long history, one clouded by the mists and myths of time. A consideration of the activities undertaken by the so-called morion, a largely male practice of dressing as Roman soldiers and participating in a range of events over the course of Holy Week, brings to the fore the ways in which local communities can fragment and also create new practices and traditions. At this site local and provincial politics play an important role in shaping and containing the events of the week, though ultimately some individuals and groups find ways to successfully circumvent external controls.
