I have been fortunate in the course of completing this translation to have been the beneficiary of a great deal of support and assistance. My university, International Christian University, granted me sabbatical leaves in 2001–2002 and 2009–2010 that allowed me to conduct the primary research in Hanoi and complete the final manuscript. The Centre for Vietnamese Studies in Hanoi provided logistical support in arranging visas and access to research facilities. The staff of the Vietnamese National Archives I in Hanoi was also gracious in providing me access to the colonial-era files I needed. I am not by training a professional translator, but Stephen Snyder and John Nathan, both of whom have extensive experience translating Japanese literature, were generous in sharing their thoughts and ideas about translation. Nguyễn Tấn Lan Thy worked through the complete text with me and helped with difficult translations. Olga Dror, Lisa Drummond, Tine Gammeltoft, Greg Shaya, and especially Laurence Monnais provided helpful suggestions, ideas, and clarifications. Pamela Kelley, David Chandler, Rita Kipp, Ann Ludeman, Bojana Ristich, and the staff of the University of Hawai‘i Press were very helpful moving the project forward. My late wife Christy was an early encourager of the project, and my son Liêm helped prepare the photographs. Finally, Peter Zinoman and Nguyễn Nguyệt Cầm, the translators of Phụng’s novel Dumb Luck, introduced me to the text and provided innumerable constructive ideas and suggestions. My deepest thanks to all.
