Abstract
This chapter departs from the traditional usage of the term “Spanish Lake” in an effort to delineate and chart the dynamic Castilian conceptualization of the Pacific Ocean between the sixteenth and the nineteenth centuries. Topics discussed include the three fragile pillars on which Iberian claims to the Pacific rested; the lucrative maritime trade route established by Castilians in the mid-1560s that bound together the backwater pueblo of Acapulco in New Spain with the effervescent capital/emporium of Manila on Luzon; and the Spanish dream of islands—the state of mind or mentality produced by the many islands of the Spanish monarchy.
