Abstract
This chapter discusses the religion of the Chuukic islands. Chuuk religions reflect the social structure of the Chuukic islands, and both are fragmented and highly localized. Just as the Chuuk religions reflected the social structure, they also reflected or addressed the everyday needs and life of the people: concern with livelihood and food supply, the crises of nature (drought, disease, and especially typhoons), warfare between lineages and islands, passing on traditions and titles, and death. There are three key terms that represent Chuuk religions: énú, roong, and sowu. Énú means spirits, including what would be called gods, ghosts, demons, and souls of the deceased. Roong means spirit knowledge and sowu are the experts or specialists who possessed the roong, which they use in their rituals and actions.
