Information for Authors

Instructions for Contributors

Holocaust and Genocide Studies welcomes the submission of original research for editorial consideration. Submission involves the tacit assurance that the material has not been published and will not be simultaneously submitted or published elsewhere. To be accepted for publication, articles must pass peer review by at least two experts in the field. Manuscripts that are narrowly focused or particularly technical may be published as research notes. Specific submission instructions for articles, and book reviews, can be found on the page below.

Holocaust and Genocide Studies also accepts for consideration proposals for special sections and special issues. Please send proposals to the HGS editors [email protected].

Author Guidelines - Articles and Research Notes

Authors should submit their manuscripts through the journal's online submission system ScholarOne.

In general, manuscripts should follow the latest edition of the Chicago Manual of Style. Article manuscripts should be no more than 12,000 words, including notes.

Articles with images should include no more than ten images, though five to six images are more common. It is the responsibility of authors to provide high resolution images (minimum 300dpi).

It is also the responsibility of authors to obtain written permission (including payment of fees) to reproduce any material under copyright (including text, such as poetry, charts, tables, photographs, illustrations, etc.), for print and online publication, in perpetuity. Such permissions should be supplied when submitting the manuscript and authors are recommended to begin this process early to avoid any delays in potential publication. It is also the author's responsibility to include acknowledgements as stipulated by the copyright holders. Information and documentation to assist the author in securing print and online permissions can be found here https://academic.oup.com/DocumentLibrary/Pages/access_purchase_rights_and_permissions/new-permissions-guidelines-update.pdf

The editors will consider manuscripts in other languages. If an article is submitted in a language other than English, an English language abstract is required.  If the decision is made to send the submission to external peer review, authors are responsible for the translation of their article into English.

Figure accessibility and alt text

Incorporating alt text (alternative text) when submitting your paper helps to foster inclusivity and accessibility. Good alt text ensures that individuals with visual impairments or those using screen readers can comprehend the content and context of your figures. The aim of alt text is to provide concise and informative descriptions of your figure so that all readers have access to the same level of information and understanding, and that all can engage with and benefit from the visual elements integral to scholarly content. Including alt text demonstrates a commitment to accessibility and enhances the overall impact and reach of your work.

Alt text is applicable to all images, figures, illustrations, and photographs.

Alt text is only accessible via e-reader and so it won’t appear as part of the typeset article.

Author Guidelines – Book Reviews

Holocaust and Genocide Studies publishes book reviews to apprise readers of recent scholarship and to create an interdisciplinary forum for rigorous intellectual dialogue about new and thought-provoking perspectives in Holocaust and genocide studies. Reviews cover works from around the world and reflect diverse disciplinary approaches and scholarly contexts. While most reviewed titles are in English, books written in other languages are also eligible for review. Book reviews should summarize a work’s contents and contributions, assess strengths and weaknesses, and communicate its relevance to diverse audiences.

Reviews of single titles are typically 1,000–1,200 words, while review essays that address multiple related works should be approximately 2,500–3,000 words. Although normative language is certainly appropriate, Holocaust and Genocide Studies will not publish reviews that distort content or contain ad hominem attacks. Holocaust and Genocide Studies also does not accept unsolicited book reviews.

Individuals interested in reviewing a specific book for the journal should contact the book review editors before writing. Please email our book review editor at [email protected].

We accept both print and ebooks for consideration for review. Publishers interested in submitting books as candidates for review should send them to [email protected] or Book Review Editors, Holocaust and Genocide Studies, c/o Academic Publications, Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies, United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, 100 Raoul Wallenberg Place SW, Washington, DC 20024-2126.

Author Gratis Copies

We are happy to provide authors of research articles and notes with one complimentary print copy of the issue in which their work appears, and an accessible link to their article. Book review authors will receive an accessible link to their review.

Upon receipt of accepted manuscripts at Oxford Journals, authors will be invited to complete an online copyright license to publish form via an online portal, SciPris.

Open Access Options

Holocaust and Genocide Studies offers the option of publishing under either a standard licence or an open access licence.
