Filmmaking is a collaborative art, and first I would like to thank the filmmakers (the director, cast, and crew of He’s a Woman, She’s a Man) without which there would be no film and therefore no book possible, and also the many audiences that have seen and responded to the film. My deepest gratitude goes to Terence Chang and Law Kar, for their continued kindness to me and their generous assistance and deep discernments when called upon. I would also like to recognize and thank those in Hong Kong who helped me in a variety of ways with helpful information and insights and reaching larger Hong Kong audiences, specifically Jeremy Fernando, Jason Ho, June Lam, Carson Lau, Paris Lau, Doris Luey, and Denise Tang. I am very grateful to my readers, some of them with a specialty in the field and others intelligent but uninformed, including some “ordinary people” like Wing…If only we could all be those special ordinary people, as Wing is described in the theme song “Chase”! My readers served not only as proofreaders but also offered suggestions and presented questions that led to new paths of investigation. Readers include Michael Hoover, Grace Kim, Karen Longtin, Jean Lukitsh, Rei Rendon, Michael Robinson, Mike Simpson, Albert Valentin and, last but not least, Tyler Stokes. I want to thank my two translators, Debbie Quach (for print material) and Jamie Wong Hei-kwan (for translation of film dialogue). Thanks go to Peter Chan’s assistants, Tairy Chan and Candy Yuen, as well as Quentin Lee, for their help. Thanks also go to Gina Marchetti for thinking of me for this series, and to the series editors and advisors for accepting my proposal; I also appreciate the patience and understanding of publisher Colin Day, associate publisher Michael Duckworth, editor Ian Lok and project editor Dawn Lau, the insights of anonymous readers, and the work of the staff at Hong Kong University Press.
