This anthology was conceived and published in honor of Chad Hansen, chair professor emeritus of Chinese philosophy at the University of Hong Kong. The volume grew out of a conference held in Hansen's honor on the occasion of his retirement from the University of Hong Kong in 2008, at which earlier versions of nine of the fourteen essays included here were presented.
Since the 1970s, Hansen has ranked among the world's foremost philosophical interpreters of classical Chinese thought. His original, provocative insights into the conceptual structure, driving issues, and substantive doctrines of early Chinese philosophical discourse have had a far-reaching impact on international scholarship, both through the many features of his theories that have been adopted by younger scholars and through the thoughtful critical responses his work has inspired. This volume aims to honor Hansen and his career by presenting a collection of original contributions to early Chinese ethics, a field that has been among his main interests for nearly four decades. The volume is not a festschrift in the usual sense of a collection of essays discussing the honoree's work, typically accompanied by replies. Only two or three of the essays included here focus directly on Hansen's views. Instead, we have assembled a collection of previously unpublished papers pertaining to early Chinese ethics that in various ways—sometimes directly, sometimes obliquely—take their departure from, engage with, or bear on themes in Hansen's writings.
