Abstract
This chapter considers the meaning of Moral Tradition Respect (MTR) and uses these possibilities to illuminate the nature and function of Hansen's distinctive account. A first understanding of MTR is called the traditions as persons interpretation. A second and related understanding of MTR most closely resembles Kant's views about aesthetic judgments. Kant famously argued that the beautiful is a symbol of the moral, by which he meant, among other things, that the former shares certain features with the latter and engages some of the same human capacities and responses. This understanding of MTR is known as the traditions as art interpretation. A third possibility is to understand MTR as a judgment concerning the moral value of other traditions and perhaps indirectly their value as a goad or guide to help one understand more about what is good. This understanding of MTR is called the traditions as values interpretation.
