Abstract
This chapter looks at the the ethical issues that have been coming to the fore with the development of the New Documentary Movement. It challenges the presumption of cinematic objectivity in the movement, and focuses on the many instances of intrusion by the filmmaker into the scene, including prodding subjects into action. Analyzing four films in detail, the discussion not only raises questions about intrusions into others' seemingly private lives but also demonstrates how these intrusive films rely on a notion of auteurship that implicitly highlights the inherent theatricality behind the supposedly spontaneous interactions in other documentary films.
Keywords:
cinematic objectivity, film intrusion, private lives, auteurship, theatricality, director's intervention
